Adolescents

Does your teen seem down or anxious?

Do you find yourself missing your teen as they withdraw from life?

I have extensive experience working with teenagers and their families. In outpatient/in-office therapy, wilderness therapy settings, and the therapeutic boarding school environment, I have treated teenagers with depression, substance use, oppositional behaviors, attachment/adoption issues, anxiety, family conflict, difficulty with accountability and responsibility, and more.

During my time in programs, both the therapeutic relationship and treatment outcomes were consistently measured using well established assessment tools. Teens described sessions that felt meaningful and productive, and reported fewer symptoms across the board. Their families reported less conflict, more understanding, improved communication, and healthier family dynamics overall.

A strong therapeutic relationship between a therapist and a client is vital to successful therapy, particularly when working with teenagers. Teens feel heard and understood with me, as well as pushed to examine their lives in a more insightful and productive way.

I especially find joy when kids finally understand the resilient person they are beneath the behaviors and noise they are creating in life. I love seeing them break through those problematic patterns, using small moments in therapy to redefine who they are. It is wonderful to watch them create change by developing a healthier and more complex view of their identity.

Teen often feel pressured to change by the adults around them. My work with teenagers helps them find their own motivations to improve their lives, which almost always aligns with the changes those that care about them wish to see. Through therapy, they increase the confidence and sense of self required to make choices that align with their family values and moral compass.
